About us

The Chiweta Children Support foundation is founded in 2016 by Thomas Ngwira (Primary Education Advisor in the Salima District in Malawi) and Frank Arents (Chairman of the Discover the World foundation in the Netherlands). They have met each other in 2011 in Senga Bay, Malawi and started to cooperate together to improve the Senga Bay Primary School. After the first buildings were improved the government and other organizations saw the progress and decided to support the school as well. Because of the results at the school headmaster Thomas Ngwira of the Senga Bay Primary School was promoted to the job of Primary Education Advisor in the Salima District which Senga Bay is part of.

Now the Senga Bay Primary School was doing fine again, especially with the supporting organizations still involved, Thomas Ngwira and Frank Arents decided to start another project in 2015. They supported 4 children from standard 8 of the Senga Bay Primary School to secondary school. This pilot worked out well, so the next year they decided to support another 4 children and to register the Chiweta Children Support foundation. Chiweta is a river in the Rumphi district in the north of Malawi where Thomas Ngwira is born. Because of the salt in this hot water river they used it for food and it became an important source to survive. Thomas and Frank decided to name the foundation after this river to support the children in Malawi on their way to a better future.

Since 2017 the foundation also selects children from other primary schools in the Salima district and since the school year 2018/2019 we support 16 children (4 in each year of the secondary school) with scholarships.
